“This assumption of the intrinsically repressive nature of collective experience and redemptive power of individuation is a staple of contemporary art theory and criticism. I would argue that a closer analysis of collaborative and collective art practices can reveal a more complex model of social change and identity, one in which the binary oppositions of divided vs. coherent subjectivity, desiring singularity vs. totalizing collective, liberating distanciation vs. stultifying interdependence, are challenged and complicated.”
― Grant H. Kester, The One and the Many: Contemporary Collaborative Art in a Global Context

Oakland meeting of the discussion club last month was small but fun. We are still concentrating on Grant Kester’s book, The One and The Many and continuing the discussion on Ben Davis’ 9.5 Theses on Art & Class. They make an interesting pairing and we wanted to give everyone a chance to catch-up. Michael and Soumyaa are hosting.

Please check email for directions. Don’t let your lack of reading deter you from attending.  Mostly it’s a time to get together and have a fascinating discussion, as always seems to be the case with our group.

Really wonderful way to spend the afternoon today! Next meeting will be at Random Parts in Oakland: Thanks Carlo for hosting in such a lovely space! We’re shifting gears and taking on Rebecca Solnit’s Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities that Arise in Disaster. I’ll let Carlo take the lead on date and time for next meeting.

I’ve started a wiki page for documenting some “notes” from our conversations and as a way to generate wiki content. You can see the page here. Please feel free to add. My oxytocin submerged nursing brain has a poor memory for pretty much anything unrelated to babies so I’ve started a rudimentary list of things I remember from today as well as last two meetings. I feel that this a poor reflection of our conversations and the ideas that have been raised and explored. So again, please feel free to add. :) (If you don’t have access to the wiki, it’s probably because I’ve not yet had the pleasure of speaking to you in person about the Bay Area Society for Art & Activism. Let me know and I can send you the proper permissions!)

    Hugs and Happy New Year!
